in the Jewish Community
Often, when people hear about my work at CHANA, the Counseling,
Helpline & Aid Network for Abused Women, they ask: “Do Jewish men
really do that?” “Does domestic violence really happen in the Jewish
community?”
Several prevalent myths lead Jews to doubt that domestic violence is a
Jewish problem. One such myth is that Jewish families are loving,
nurturing and harmonious.
“Shalom bayit,”
domestic tranquility, is a
central ideal in Judaism, but unfortunately it is not the reality in many
homes. Another myth is that domestic violence is limited to families
that are less educated, of low socioeconomic status, non-observant,
intermarried, immigrant–the list goes on. In fact, individuals with all
levels of social power, status and connection can choose to exert
control over those close to them. With enough forcefulness, an abuser
can victimize anyone, regardless of the person’s resources.
We all want to believe that domestic violence happens only to others–
not to people who live near us, who sit with us in shul, whose children
go to school with our children, who are our sisters, mothers, or
friends. This belief can prevent us from recognizing dangerous
situations and from being able to reach out to and support women who
are being abused.
Domestic Violence and Jewish Women
Substantial evidence shows that emotional, sexual and physical abuse
happens to women of every economic class, every culture, every racial
background, every level of education, and every religion. Domestic
violence occurs in Jewish families at about the same rate as it does in
families of other religions – about 15-25%. Domestic violence is found
in every kind of Jewish home: Reform, Conservative, Orthodox,
Reconstructionist, and unaffiliated. Women being pushed out of society is not anything that is new to me. I was yelled at to go to the back of a bus 8 years ago. It was a humiliating experience. I went to the back of the bus because I was afraid of being physically attacked. I didn’t have the strength to fight back yet. When it started affecting my daughter, I realized something had to be done. No one will bully, harass, or abuse my child without me doing everything in power to stop it. My head came out of the sand, quickly. I am grateful that the media attention this issue received helped better the situation in regards to my daughters school. However, the wider issue must still be dealt with.
My daughter, if anything, will learn from her mother that we are powerful, and we can make a change. We can make things better. Small steps at a time, but we will get there.
I’m on a mission to be inspired by all the powerful women out there. There are so many influential women around me. I am inspired by the women who are making a difference in the world around them, instead of keeping silent.

Condo Association Fees

If the emergency clinician is to recognize occult domestic violence and correctly interpret its associated behavior, a high index of suspicion is necessary, and battering must be entertained in the differential diagnosis of a wide variety of presenting complaints. In this regard, much improvement is needed. An accurate diagnosis of battering is estimated in less than 1 of 25 women. Data from another study documented that 23% of women presented 6-10 times and another 20% sought medical attention on 11 occasions before a diagnosis of abuse finally was made.
Yet, if a request for help is not explicit, the opportunity to intervene in domestic violence often is not addressed. The following elements may deter interceding in domestic violence:
- Social factors, such as implicit and explicit social norms, societal tolerance of violence, and desensitization through exposure
- Personal factors, such as sex bias, personal history of abuse, idealized concepts of family life, concerns over privacy, and perceived powerlessness
- Professional factors, such as time constraints, inadequate skills, professional detachment, and professional relationships with abusers or victims
- Institutional and legal factors such as inadequate or unclear policies and fear of legal reprisal
- Additional barriers including blaming the victim, disapproving of her or his decisions and circumstances, questioning patients in an inappropriate manner, and failing to query middle-class or affluent patients in the mistaken belief that such individuals are not victims of domestic violence
