Three girls injured in last year’s Glenbrook North High School hazing incident have sued 22 former students and 40 of their parents for more than $1.5 million for injuries and emotional trauma.
Cheryl Daley, Marina Fonarev and Lauren Wilner are seeking $500,000 each in actual damages plus punitive damages, according to the suit filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court. The suit contends that the Northfield Township High School District 225 board has information relevant to the case, but it was not named as a defendant.
“I have clients with serious, permanent injuries who deserve to be compensated,” attorney Rollin Soskin said Wednesday.
The suit was filed on the first anniversary of the notorious “powder puff” football game in the Chipilly Woods forest preserve near Northbrook. Videotapes showed junior girls–including the plaintiffs–being beaten and pelted with animal parts and filth by senior girls. Some boys also were involved, and two were named as defendants.
Five students wound up in the hospital, including Lauren Christiansen, who with her parents filed suit Friday against the school district and two students who she says injured her.
Officials of the Northbrook school expelled 33 seniors, and 16 students were found guilty of criminal battery or alcohol-related charges. Two parents were found guilty
of providing alcohol to minors or a place for them to drink.
According to the lawsuit, Daley needed 10 stitches in her scalp and had a concussion; cuts and bruises; and back and hip pain; Fonarev had a fractured skull, concussion, memory loss, hearing loss, a shredded ear and a fractured tailbone; and Wilner had cuts and bruises, a concussion, memory loss and a forehead injury.
All three complained of loss of hair, sleeplessness, humiliation and embarrassment and have required psychological counseling, according to the suit.
Soskin said he approached families of other students involved in the hazing and asked for financial settlements to avoid legal action. Some agreed, he said, but he declined to elaborate on the terms of the deals.
Settlements were not offered to those who allegedly did the battering, Soskin said.
“The senior girls got to go on with their lives like nothing happened, and it’s about time the junior girls got compensated, because they could not,” Soskin said.
“We believe all the defendants are jointly responsible,” and they would have to figure out liability among themselves, Soskin said.
Phyllis Gendelman of Northbrook, whose daughter, Liat, was expelled over the hazing, is named in the suit.
“For us, it’s without merit,” she said. “This is America, and America is lawsuit-crazy. But my daughter never laid a hand on anyone.

Hazing incident
In May 2003, Glenbrook North High School gained notoriety after an off-campus, non-school-sanctioned event involving students dressed in school colors turned into a major hazing incident that attracted media attention.
The event was a “Powder Puff” girls’ football game between juniors and seniors. The “game” took place on Sunday, May 4, 2003, in Chipilly Woods, part of the Cook County Forest Preserve District. Although the annual Powder Puff game was held at the school football stadium in earlier decades, there was no playing of football at the 2003 event. The hazing began as soon as the junior girls arrived. About 20 junior class participants were sat in the middle of a clearing while they were covered in paint, urine, feces, and animal guts. Some were shot with paintball guns, others were kicked and beaten. After it was over, at least five of the participants had injuries requiring medical attention, including one receiving stitches to her head.[18]
